Victoria’s premier regional private hospital, St John of God, provides an extensive range of health care services and facilities.

Located in Ballarat, the hospital has dedicated maternity, cardiology, oncology, emergency care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation departments, as well as cafes and accommodation for patients and visitors – all of which require reliable access to hot water facilities.

After 18 months of intensive construction, its new medical services building, which will house four operating theatres, a recovery room, a 10-bed ICU/CCU and a new 30-bed inpatient ward, will open to the public in late 2024.

A need for greater energy efficiency, combined with ambitions to reduce its carbon footprint, would pave the way for the first successful installation of Rheem’s Raypak MVB (Modulating Vertical Burner) in Victoria.

The Brief

Having previously worked with Stantec Engineering, Rheem Commercial was contacted to devise an efficient heating plant solution to support the hospital’s expansion of its new medical services building.

The design would also need to contribute to the hospital’s sustainability goal of achieving a minimum 50 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

After collaborating with Stantec Engineering and Q and O Plumbing, Rheem Commercial developed site-specific schematics for the implementation of the new system.

The Solution: RAYPAK MVB

Working within the building constraints, the team installed multiple high-efficiency Raypak MVBs on the roof of the new hospital wing. The compact and modular nature of the heater has the smallest physical footprint on the market, allowing it to be seamlessly integrated by Q and O Plumbing.

This model has up to 88.4 per cent efficiency and can operate as low as 49°C without additional bypasses. With the ability to deliver up to 7,332 litres of hot water over the peak period, each MVB can recover at 3,256 litres per hour while taking up less than one square metre.

Additionally, there is a colour touchscreen interface with Building Management System (BMS) capabilities, providing up-to-date information on the plant’s performance.

Rheem Commercial was involved every step of the way, from the proposal with the design consultant through to the final commissioning and installation.
