Mental health care is a crucial part of Australia’s overall wellbeing. For people experiencing mental illness, especially those with complex needs, access to safe and therapeutic facilities is essential not only for their treatment, but for the wellbeing and resilience of the wider community.

As part of the NSW Government’s Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program, the new Burudyara facility is an expansion of the Concord Centre for Mental Health precinct within the Concord Hospital campus, specialising in forensic care.

Rheem Commercial was chosen to design a tailored hot water solution for the new development, which would support everything from hygiene and infection control to patient bathing and laundry, all of which are crucial for quality patient care.

The Brief for concord centre

ARUP Consulting contacted Rheem Commercial in the early stages of planning for the new centre, to provide a reliable and compact water heating system.

Prioritising safety, comfort, and operational efficiency, the facility accommodates 42 hospital beds and includes communal spaces, two washing machines, and clinical areas designed for people with complex mental health needs.

Rheem Commercial collaborated closely with ARUP Consulting on system proposals, and mechanical and hydraulic plumbing services provider, Brown and Moodie, for on-site installation and adaptations.

Detailed plumbing diagrams were tailored to the facility’s unique requirements, including built-in redundancy for uninterrupted service, the Centre’s limited plantroom space, and product recommendations to suit site changes.

The Solution: custom-configured hot water system

Rheem Commercial installed a custom-configured hot water system at the new Concord Centre for Mental Health facility, featuring a combination of commercial heat pumps and electric heating units, balancing efficiency, reliability, and compact design.

The Air to Water Heat Pump was chosen for its ability to deliver long-term energy savings while maintaining high output. Capable of heating water to 65°C with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of up to 4.0 at 20°C ambient temperature, the system can produce up to four units of heat energy for every unit of electricity consumed.

These efficiencies not only reduce expenses but also contribute to improved environmental performance, supporting the facility’s green energy rating.

Rheem Commercial’s Electric Heating Units with Sun Sheild were included as a deliberate redundancy measure, critical in a hospital setting, as even a short interruption potentially risking patient care, hygiene standards, and infection control. The backup ensures uninterrupted supply during maintenance, peak demand, or unexpected equipment issues.

During the build, Rheem provided site specific schematics to upgrade certain products for alternatives that better suited construction requirements.
